The Assistant Finance Director will supervise staff, examine and verify financial documents, prepare financial reports, maintain and reconcile accounts, and perform various accounting tasks. The role requires a Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field, local government experience, and a minimum of three years of experience in government finance. Knowledge of GAAP, governmental fund accounting, and budgeting principles is essential.
Job Responsibility:
Supervising staff
Examining, interpreting, and verifying financial documents and reports
Utilizing accounting systems to prepare monthly financial reports and statements
Maintaining and reconciling accounts
Conducting detailed accounting studies
Verifying daily entries and researching inconsistencies
Processing journal vouchers
Coordinating daily operations including cash receipts, accounts payable/receivable, utility billing, bank reconciliation, financial reports, bank deposits, and posting of funds
Directing and preparing monthly financial statements
Supervising and reviewing the work of accounting staff
Performing various accounting tasks such as making and adjusting journal entries, opening and closing accounts, and closing the ledger at the end of the fiscal year
Coordinating monthly, quarterly, and annual closing activities
Preparing accounting, fiscal, and related reports
Maintaining detailed records and files
Resolving complex accounting issues
Reviewing general ledger for accuracy
Making recommendations to improve accounting processes
Reconciling accounts and subsidiary ledgers
Assisting in the preparation of a Comprehensive Annual Financial Report and budget presentation documents
Serving as the budget analyst
Revising budget records
Processing customer checks returned by the bank
Assisting in preparing for the year-end financial audit
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field
Local Government experience required
A minimum of three years of experience in government finance is required
Previous supervisory experience preferred
Excellent customer service skills and problem-solving are necessary
Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
Knowledge of standard governmental fund accounting principles, practices, and procedures
Knowledge of SAS 99 accounting principles and IRS guidelines
Knowledge of standard budgeting principles and practices in government finance
Knowledge of special revenue source funds such as SPLOST, grants, etc.
Knowledge of banking practices and procedures
Knowledge of business methods, purchasing practices, and laws relating to public purchasing
Knowledge of modern office practices, methods, equipment, and standard clerical procedures
Knowledge of personal computers, financial software, and general use software
Skilled in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Knowledge of applicable federal laws, state laws, and city ordinances regarding purchasing
Nice to have:
Previous supervisory experience
Knowledge of special revenue source funds such as SPLOST, grants, etc.
