Job Description:
This role offers a unique opportunity to work across both collections, focusing on eucalypt taxonomy to support fundamental and applied research. The successful candidate will apply botanical expertise to curate the ANH eucalypt collection, develop taxonomy skills, and contribute to electronic identification key development.
Job Responsibility:
  • Curate ANH herbarium specimens, applying taxonomic revisions, maintaining collections, and ensuring proper documentation
  • Manage and update taxonomic, herbarium specimen, and collections management databases
  • Contribute to electronic identification tools, including data collection, taxonomy updates, image selection, and user testing
  • Identify eucalypts and related taxa in the field and participate in collections-related fieldwork as needed
  • Respond to client requests professionally, ensuring clear communication and monitoring satisfaction
  • Provide guidance to less experienced staff, overseeing tasks and ensuring adherence to protocols
Requirements:
  • Experience in botanical specimen management and herbarium collection curation
  • Familiarity with taxonomic literature and its application to collections
  • Strong interest in Australian flora with the capacity to develop expertise in eucalypt botany
  • Experience in developing and using electronic tools for plant or animal identification, including biological databases, taxonomic keys, and software
  • Ability to lead and collaborate within a team, communicate effectively with staff and clients, and establish collaborative work arrangements
  • Initiative and adaptability in work processes, with the ability to implement changes effectively
  • Relevant trade certificate, diploma, bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience in biological collections management
  • A current driver’s licence
Nice to have:
  • Skills and experience in vascular plant identification
  • Knowledge of molecular tools for population genetics and taxonomy
  • Ability to visit field sites in remote and rugged locations
