Job Description:

Our client, a well-established and growing company in the construction sector, is seeking a detail-oriented and organized Payroll Specialist to join their team in La Jolla, CA. This role provides an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic, high-impact industry, with a focus on payroll accuracy, compliance, and efficiency. The Payroll Specialist will oversee the full-cycle payroll process, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and the timely and accurate disbursement of employee wages, benefits, and tax filings.

Job Responsibility:

  • Process and manage bi-weekly payroll for both hourly and salaried employees, across field and office teams
  • Calculate wages, benefits, garnishments, deductions, and overtime in accordance with company policies and labor laws
  • Prepare and submit certified payroll reports and ensure full compliance with prevailing wage regulations for government-funded projects (if applicable)
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date payroll records, ensuring they are aligned with company operations and state/federal guidelines
  • Coordinate with job site supervisors to approve and process employee timecards
  • Handle inquiries related to payroll, benefits, and tax deductions, providing exceptional support to employees
  • Reconcile payroll transactions and make sure all data is accurately reflected in general ledger entries
  • Partner with HR and Finance teams to support audits, benefits disbursement, and compliance efforts

Requirements:

  • 2-4 years of payroll processing experience, preferably within the construction, manufacturing, or related industries
  • Familiarity with certified payroll reporting, union payroll, or prevailing wage compliance is strongly preferred
  • Proficiency with payroll software (experience with Paychex, ADP, or similar systems required)
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll regulations, including tax compliance and labor laws (California-specific experience is a plus)
  • Exceptional attention to detail, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical team members
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field (highly preferred, but not required)
