Our client, a well-established and growing company in the construction sector, is seeking a detail-oriented and organized Payroll Specialist to join their team in La Jolla, CA. This role provides an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic, high-impact industry, with a focus on payroll accuracy, compliance, and efficiency. The Payroll Specialist will oversee the full-cycle payroll process, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and the timely and accurate disbursement of employee wages, benefits, and tax filings.
Job Responsibility:
Process and manage bi-weekly payroll for both hourly and salaried employees, across field and office teams
Calculate wages, benefits, garnishments, deductions, and overtime in accordance with company policies and labor laws
Prepare and submit certified payroll reports and ensure full compliance with prevailing wage regulations for government-funded projects (if applicable)
Maintain accurate and up-to-date payroll records, ensuring they are aligned with company operations and state/federal guidelines
Coordinate with job site supervisors to approve and process employee timecards
Handle inquiries related to payroll, benefits, and tax deductions, providing exceptional support to employees
Reconcile payroll transactions and make sure all data is accurately reflected in general ledger entries
Partner with HR and Finance teams to support audits, benefits disbursement, and compliance efforts
Requirements:
2-4 years of payroll processing experience, preferably within the construction, manufacturing, or related industries
Familiarity with certified payroll reporting, union payroll, or prevailing wage compliance is strongly preferred
Proficiency with payroll software (experience with Paychex, ADP, or similar systems required)
Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll regulations, including tax compliance and labor laws (California-specific experience is a plus)
Exceptional attention to detail, organizational, and problem-solving skills
Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel
Strong communication skills, including the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical team members
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field (highly preferred, but not required)
Nice to have:
Familiarity with certified payroll reporting, union payroll, or prevailing wage compliance
